Caregiving in Dementia: A Positive Vision

Training continues to be a major priority for our branch. The aim is to work with Health, Adult Services (Social Services), Residential Homes and other agencies involved in dementia care by encouraging and providing appropriate training.

Care for people with dementia will never reach the high standard we need unless training is widespread and reaches all care settings.

FREE COURSE FOR PEOPLE CARING FOR A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND AT HOME
This free course is specifically aimed at people caring for relatives and friends who are either living with them or in their own home. The aim of the course is to give information and support which will enable family and friends to care for as long as possible and hopefully improve the quality of life for all concerned.
Subjects covered include: What is dementia? - Medications, purpose and effect - Local information and support services plus voluntary bodies that may help - Financial aspects and legal issues - Resources and benefits - How to understand and communicate-Difficult care issues. Understanding Dementia
This is a basic day or half-day course developed for staff working in the community, hospital or in a residential/nursing home.
The programme includes the following: Types of dementia - Coping with perplexing behaviour -Communication- Sensory stimulation.

Power of Abuse with the Perspective on Dementia

A half study day on the above held on request in individual nursing and residential homes. The programme includes: Defining dementia - Who, why and where people abuse - Types of abuser - Types of abuse and how to identify - Case histories - What action should to taken in cases of abuse - Confidentiality and disclosure-Looking at the rights of the person with dementia.

"Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow"-Providing Quality Person-Centred Care in Dementia
A modular training package for staff in residential and nursing setting, including: The experience of people with dementia - What is dementia - The need for good communication - Life in the Home (2) - Building and maintaining relationships - Understanding behaviour we find difficult - Working together.
Run in smaller groups in 8 sessions (1½ hours each) to enable more participation. Half-day taster sessions may also be available by arrangement. There has been excellent feedback from this course from homes and participants
